Le Bernardin 155 W 51stStreet., New York

Cuisine – 3* Classical French – fish and shellfish

Subway – 7th Avenue or 49th Street

I first visited here in 1999 and fell in love with everything about the place. It is faultless from the welcome on arrival until you leave. The attention to detail without it being like a theatre performance, is perfectly executed.

Classic French kitchen technique married with unbelievably good fish and shellfish produces dishes of exceptional flavour and texture - there’s also steak, duck and a full vegetarian tasting menu if you’re not overly excited by fish and shells.

You get dressed to come here, it’s a beautiful restaurant, understated luxury, impeccably turned-out team delivering outstanding service.

This is my favourite 3 star Michelin restaurant in New York, it is very special.

Chefs Table Brooklyn Fare - 431 W. 37th St., New York

Cuisine – 3*

Subway – 42nd Street Port Authority or 34th Street Hudson Yds

Booking - essential

The fine dining experience in Brooklyn is a set menu of many bite-sized and perfectly formed dishes with distinct Asian influences, served to all 40 diners at the same time.

Whether it is a Scottish langoustine or Wagyu beef, the culinary skill to maximise flavour and texture is breathtaking.

Without doubt, the best dining experience is sitting at the walnut countertop overlooking the kitchen. It is pure theatre watching these highly skilled professionals cooking, preparing and presenting your food. The precision taken in plating is an art form in my opinion.

The wine cellar is an excellent collection of predominantly old-world wines and champagnes. The wine pairing, given the many different flavours and Asian influences is impressive. You need to be adventurous to enjoy the experience to the max!

Daniel - 60 E. 65th St., New York

Cuisine – 2* Classic French

Subway – Lexington Ave 63rd Street

Situated between Madison and Park Avenues, Daniel Boulud’s two Michelin star restaurant has become an institution in its near thirty-year life on the city’s Upper East side.

The current seven-course tasting menu includes beef, wagyu oxtail, lamb, lobster, tuna and crab, and the culinary skills are exceptional.

The cellar is excellent and as you would expect there is a noticeable and impressive lean towards French Burgundy, and Rhone listings and equally, the Champagne programme is superb. We also love the Lalique cocktail bar, and it is worth arriving early to enjoy a pre-dinner glass or two!

The dining room was recently refurbished, and it is one of the finest in the city. Grand and classic in style but blended with a modern feel and warmth. It is like stepping back in time and you do recognise that you are somewhere special. Looking to impress that special person in your life, or business partner, consider Daniel and you should get dressed to dine here, it is a wonderful experience.

Oxomoco - 128 Greenpoint Ave., Brooklyn, New York

Cuisine – 1* Mexican

Subway – Greenpoint Avenue

Booking - advisable

Brooklyn has always been home to a multicultural haven of great restaurants and Oxomoco is part of this family.

There’s a real mix of regional influences reflected in the menu content, and this is the best Mexican food that I’ve eaten in the city, they know their chilli’s!!

Internally, it’s a narrow space with a long bar and huge roof light, and they also have an outdoor dining patio area. The whole vibe is unpretentious and it always appears to be busy, you need to book to secure a table here.

The menu balances a lot of fresh and vibrant flavours and doesn’t host a poor dish. Tacos are outstanding especially the tilefish with pickled leeks and the lamb barbacoa is also superb. For the table, do order the red peanuts with garlic and chilli, the tuna tostada with avocado, and the chips with a few super tasty salsa’s, all guaranteed to kick start your appetite.

Al Coro - 85 10th Ave., New York

Cuisine – 2* Contemporary Italian

Subway – 14th Street/8th Avenue

Booking - essential

Italian fine dining under the management of the excellent Chef Melissa Rodriguez (ex-Daniel Boulud) This is modern Italian rather than traditional, and the food and culinary skills displayed by the kitchen team are impressive. We liked it very much on our visit, as did the other guys in the team when they dined there in September 22.

Your meal begins with excellent antipasti, standouts for me were the prosciutto and balsamic mackerel and bruschetta con fagioli with a ragu and salvia fritta (fried sage leaves – delicious) followed by spaghetti nero with king crab and chilli which was outstanding. We shared a Pear Semifreddo that was also superb.

They cellar a very impressive collection of Italian wines and vintages – we enjoyed a very nice 2011 Barolo from Bartolo Mascarello – the only negative on the list was the pricing of the French Burgundy’s that I feel were expensive particularly for the entry level Bourgogne’s - sadly though, NY eateries tend to charge a hefty premium for good Burgundy and Bordeaux producers.
