Lahinch and Ballybunion are ranked 29th and 19th in the World top 100 golf courses. Along with Tralee and Waterville, they are all situated on some of the most beautiful and rugged coastlines in Europe. The final gem in this five-course tour is the unique Old Head Golf Links, perched on a headland 200 feet above the Atlantic. These five Clubs offer the very best golf in the West of Ireland.
LAHINCH OLD GOLF COURSE (29th World top 100 courses)
It is a traditional out and back routing but features some of the quirkiest holes that you will ever play on a world top 100 course.
We always recommend that our groups take a caddy when playing the Old Course at Lahinch.
With blind shots from the tees and approach shots over massive dunes, drops in fairway height and some tricky reads on the greens, you will be in better shape to have someone help with the lines and club selection.
Make no mistake, this is a fantastic experience with staggering natural beauty. Sitting on Liscannor Bay bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and with the Inagh river estuary to the North, it is one of golf’s very finest locations.
BALLYBUNION GOLF LINKS (19th World top 100 courses)*
Ballybunion Golf Links is an exceptional golf course routed through massive sand dunes and sitting right next to the Atlantic Ocean.
The run of holes from the 7th to the 17th are just fantastic, with the 11th rightly regarded by many as a real sensory experience and a true test of golf.
Those holes that run along the top of the dunes with the beach below, are stunning, and if there is a westerly blowing straight off the Atlantic, this course can be a ferocious, but an enjoyable test of your strategy and club selection.
TRALEE GOLF COURSE
The setting and views are stunning and the golf course layout is superb with many holes bordering alongside Barrow beach.
Our advice would be to select the best tees to suit your ability and the wind speed. This course needs to be enjoyed and from the back boxes, when there is more than a breeze coming in off the Atlantic, is a real challenge even for low handicap golfers.
The back nine is like playing a different course from the front nine. The dunes are huge and the routing between them is fabulous with some big carries to plateau greens, but this is immense fun.
Your welcome and hospitality is typically Irish, friendly and accommodating.
WATERVILLE GOLF LINKS
Situated on a promontory jutting into Ballinskelligs Bay in the North Atlantic, Waterville golf Links is in a spectacular location.
You really need to concentrate to avoid being distracted by the views!
Great opening holes with the second playing to a green by the beach when the views really open up. The par 4 slight dog leg 3rd playing along the beach really gets you in the mood for how fantastic this course is.
Waterville is another unique experience on this tour of the best Links in the South West of Ireland.
OLD HEAD GOLF LINKS
It is difficult to know where to start when talking about the Old Head Links. It is a unique golfing experience in one of the most awe-inspiring locations. The course is perched 300 feet up and routed on a headland that stretches into the Atlantic Ocean for two miles.
Strictly speaking it is a hilltop course, not a Links and it is exposed to all that nature can throw at you. When you are there, you do not really care if it is a Links or not as it is a unique golfing experience.
There are nine holes that border the cliff tops, and they are quite simply breathtaking.
The clubhouse facilities and service are first-class. The terrace either pre or post golf is a great place to relax and enjoy superb food. They will also bring you a snack at the turn if you order in advance, including oysters and Guinness or a glass of fizz!
